CHAPTER 23

IRINA, GUNTHER, AND HEINRICH

THE NEXT MORNING, SAMANTHA WALKED into the café, and Anna and Irina were already there drinking coffee. “Morning, Carrie. Get yourself some coffee at the counter. Our server will take our order when you have your coffee.”

“Okay. Be right there.”

During breakfast, the three talked small talk trying to get to know one another better. Samantha noticed once again that Irina’s English was not very good, and like in the dance club, she and Anna spoke in Russian. Their conversation seemed innocent enough because it was mostly to explain what Samantha had just said. One time, Irina did say something that caught Samantha’s attention. She said to Anna, “Keep your eye on her,” but Samantha wasn’t sure if the statement was sinister or telling Anna to watch out for Samantha on the slopes.

Samantha then asked Anna, “Where are we going to ski today?”

“We’re going to Black Rock. It’s one of my favorites. It’s very challenging, Carrie. Are you up to it?”

“Let’s hope so. But that does sound good. How far away is Black Rock?”

“If we leave now, we should be there by eight forty-five. It’s a bit of a ride but well worth it.”

“Good. Before we go, I need to let some of this coffee out. I’ll be right back.”

When Samantha got into the restroom stall, she texted Jared with the information he needed. When she was washing her hands, Anna and Irina walked into the restroom. “We decided we needed to let out some coffee as well. I also want to call my dad to let him know what we are doing today.”

A shiver went through Samantha knowing that this young woman would be talking to a man who had tried three times to kill her.

At Black Rock, Anna introduced Samantha to Guy Friedman in the rental area. He looked her over intently and said, “Nice.”

Anna responded, “Come on, Guy. Can’t you wait until the second time you see her before you hit on her?”

“Give me a break, Anna. I was just assessing her size so I could get her the right equipment.” He turned back to Samantha and said, “You going to the Eiger Zone tonight? If so, I’ll be there.”

“Guy!” Anna yelled.

“Okay. Okay. I’ll get Carrie’s stuff.”

When Guy went into the back to get Samantha’s gear, Anna said, “That guy has hit on every woman in the world, I’m sure of it.”

“Don’t worry about it. It’s kind of flattering. Besides, it helps me forget what I’m trying to deal with . . . a little.”

When Samantha was fully outfitted, the three women got in the cable car for the ride to the top. The area had just had its first snowfall of the season, and the view was spectacular. And for a few minutes, she totally forgot about her mission here in Switzerland. In fact, she was really looking forward to the exciting ski adventure before her. When they arrived at the top, Gunther and Heinrich were there waiting for them.
